Problems
related to abuse or neglect
Problems in the following categories, like relational problems, are
what we might call "non-standard" so far as mental disorders are
concerned. In every case, the problem is abuse of one person by another.
These problems involve illegal and/or immoral behaviors, and the focus of
clinical attention might fall on either the perpetrator, the victim, or
both. Because more than one person is involved in all of these types of
abuse or neglect, these problems could be classified as extreme cases of
relational problems. The names of the disorders are all that is needed to
define what they mean. We should note that there are strict laws governing
the reporting by professionals of incidents connected with the problems in
these categories. Thus it is unlikely that most perpetrators self-refer
themselves to professionals. However, victims might well do so, and
perpetrators are often referred to professionals by the criminal justice
system.
