Histrionic Personality Disorder

People diagnosed with histrionic personality (HP) try always to be the center of attention. Their sense of self depends on the approval of others. They often behave and dress seductively, even if they have no genuine sexual interest, in order to attract attention. Their emotions tend to be shallow and shifting, and their behavior dramatic and theatrical. They form relationships easily and often become intimate too quickly. Although HP is in the same cluster as antisocial personality disorder, people with HP are not generally antisocial. Similarly, although they, like people with borderline personality, tend to be manipulative, they are less self-destructive and angry. Finally, they do not tend to view themselves as superior, as do people with narcissistic personality, the last type in this cluster. As with any clinical disorder, the problems associated with the person's behavior must be stressful and maladaptive before he or she can be diagnosed with HP. The geocities web site has additional information on histrionic personality and a wealth of links to related sites.
