Mental Disorders due to a General
Medical Condition
This category includes conditions
whose cause is a diagnosable mental problem. There must be
evidence for the medical condition, the disturbance must not be
better accounted for by another mental disorder, and the problem
must not occur only when the person is delirious. Examples of
medical conditions that may cause mental problems are head trauma,
some metabolic imbalances, and encephalitis. DSM-IV lists three
subtypes of this category (see below).
