Psychotherapies
Psychological
treatments--psychotherapies--have a long, successful history in the
treatment of mental health disorders. Even in cases in which
medication is obviously needed, psychotherapy can assist in
medication management by helping the patient comply with the medical
regimen, or by helping him/her adjust to the new set of
circumstances that come into his/her life because of a mental
disorder.
There are many types of
psychotherapy that can be used to help patients. Here we will
only cover only a few of those most used in the U.S. The type
of therapy appropriate for you will depend on your specific
circumstances, the disorder that needs to be treated, etc.
Read on to learn more about the various therapies practiced in the
U.S. today by the various mental
health professionals licensed to practice psychotherapy in this
country. You should always ask a potential provider about the
type of therapy she or he provides, and what evidence demonstrates
the effectiveness of the therapy for the problem you have. Stories
about people who got better are not enough, because people sometimes
get better with or without treatment, just as they do if they have a
physical problem like a cut on their foot. Scientific evidence of
effectiveness should demonstrate that people do better with the
treatment than without it.
