Schizophrenia and
Other Psychotic Disorders
Psychosis
is the more modern term for what used to be called
"insanity." The psychotic
disorders are serious mental disorders. Even the most severe
forms of psychosis may, however, be treatable. Unfortunately, many
people with psychosis are not treated, and some become destitute,
leading a life doubly miserable because of psychosis combined with
homelessness. All people who have ever been diagnosed with a
psychosis should maintain close contact with a psychiatrist or other
mental health professional. An initial diagnosis should not be made
in the absence of a thorough physical examination, and the person's
physical condition and drug regime (if any) should be regularly
monitored. Regular sessions with a mental health professional help
individuals with psychotic disorders deal with the problems
associated with their disorder.
If you or someone you love experiences enough
symptoms to feel upset about it, you need to consult a mental health
professional (clinician, therapist). A mental
health professional will conduct a thorough evaluation
to first understand what is happening and then will discuss
treatment options, including medications.
There are many ways family
members or loved ones can help individuals to deal with their
disorder better.
