Schizotypal
Personality Disorder (SPD) is similar to Paranoid
Personality Disorder, but with less prominent paranoia,
and to Schizoid Personality Disorder, but
with cognitive and perceptual distortions. Those with SPD are
notably deficient in their ability to relate to other people, except
perhaps for close relatives. Most of them have very odd beliefs,
including magical thinking and other superstitions. They may believe
that events on television (for example) are somehow dependent on or
related to them (ideas of reference).
Their speech and appearance are likely to be peculiar. Like people
with paranoia, they may be uncomfortable in social situations
because of paranoid fears. Bizarre fantasies are not uncommon in
people with SPD. SPD is more common than Schizoid Personality
Disorder; it has been estimated to occur in as much as 3% of the
general population. Fortunately, it rarely progresses into
full-blown schizophrenia, although,
like other personality disorders, it is difficult to treat.
