Somatoform
Disorders
The thing that makes a disorder
"somatoform" is that the patient appears to have symptoms
affecting the "soma," or body. That is, the patient claims
to have, and experiences, physical symptoms that are not
intentionally produced by him or her. The symptoms are usually of
the kind that are difficult to verify. Examples are pain, problems
with the digestive system, sexual problems, and problems with the
nervous system (for example, problems with coordination or balance,
paralysis, weakness, or loss of sensation (numbness, blindness, and
deafness are examples). There are several types of somatoform
